Friday the 13^th – 1980  review

When people think of Friday the 13^th, they think about my man Jason Voorhees. Funny thing is he is barely featured in the movie; he is more of a plot device then the antagonist.  But this movie is pushing 33 years old, and if you haven’t seen it you’re not missing out.

Plot in a nutshell; there was a murder in 1958 at camp Crystal Lake that closed it down and 20 years later pornstache man (Steve) wants to open it up again. But someone doesn’t want it to open so they decide to lower the teeny bopper population.

There is not much of a plot in slasher movies; people see these movies for the blood, guts and tits. There’s a reason why they’re rated R. So maybe in 1980 this movie would impresses, but today it is a letdown. Half the people are killed off screen and all the kills look meh yo expect the Bacon kill. KEVIN BACON, you know the bad guy from x-men first class, it his first starring role and he is one son of a gun. The rest of the cast is forgettable, and the women the movies are not even that hot. Like Kevin Bacon girlfriend is doable in the dark. But none of the rest. The music and setting in the film are the only two saving graces. Harry Manfredini score is great, and sets the mood. Also the setting of the lake is awesome; it makes me wish I lived on that lake but with fewer psychos on it. The ending is good but you can just watch it on YouTube and save yourself ninety minutes.

Verdict: Not the best horror movies, if it’s on Netflix’s check it out if you’re a fan of horror movies. But don’t buy it.

Movie Review: Django Unchained

Before you watch this film please know that this was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. That statement means this film pulls no punches and doesn't shy away from touchy subjects such as slavery and American history. This film is littered with slave history, violence, derogatory language, and bigotry. In my opinion this is one of Tarantino's best films because of subject matter, character development, and entertaining retribution. Let me explain why.

Set two years before the American Civil War, Jamie Foxx stars as the slave Django (the "D" is silent) who was separated from his true love. He is liberated by German dentist Dr. King Shultz, played exquisitely by Christolph Waltz. As fate would have it Django's savior is a bounty hunter and the location of the men he is after is only known by Django himself. Dr. Shultz agrees to help rescue Django's love from her master and they become a partnership to execute justice when and where they see fit.

Movies that last longer than ninety minutes are rare and it's because of the attention span of most American viewers. Django Unchained runs for two hours and fourty-five minutes. Don't be afraid to relax and enjoy this epic of a tale just because of it's lengthy duration. In order to understand the situations and emotions placed before Django in this film the audience needs to witness all that he has faced, but it is done so with wonderful editing, memorable scenes, intense violence, vibrant characters, and intellectual dialogue.

Jamie Foxx is billed as the star but Christoph Waltz steals the entire movie. He owns every scene he speaks in and his character is an immediate fan favorite. Django IS the character of the movie with his vengeance and revenge leading him to action, but without his mentor, Dr. Shultz, Django would still be a slave. Leonardo DiCaprio takes on a villainous role as Mr. Candy who is a slave owner and Mandingo fighter (Mandingo fighting is a bout to the death between two black slaves. Think of cock-fighting but with men.) It's rare for DiCaprio to play such an evil character but he pulls it off extremely well. Watch for the scene where Candy is interrogating Django and Shultz at the dinner table; DiCaprio breaks a real glass under his hand during filming and stays in character as the cameras continue to roll. As real blood pours out of his hand all the actors continue to remain in character, even when he smears his blood in a female actress' face. GREAT acting and fantastic directing control.

The soundtrack for Django Unchained is perfection; adding generic western melodies to hardcore rap lyrics, classic rock and ballads to country driven instrumentals. Sound effects are lacking and you'll understand why when you hear bullets hit flesh and gore starts to fly but everything remains to be entertaining and far from annoying. Conversations are always audible and enunciated with cynical accents and facial expressions. Even the co-stars are flawless in their acting. 

I give Django Unchained 5 out of 5 DeathStars. Fantastic film. Congratulations Quentin Tarantino.

P.S.- This is the only movie where I've completely hated Samuel L. Jackson.

Flight Review

"Flight" Review


Plane’s, Trains, and Automobiles, is a great flick. Full of heart, soul and fun. Flight on the other hand is an average film that is uninspiring. They both feature scenes on an aircraft but where does Flight fail?



Pre Conceived Impressions and Expectations

When I first heard that Robert Zemeckis is going back to live action my heart was full of joy. This great man directed classics that include; “Back to the Future trilogy”, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, “Forrest Gump" and “Cast Away”. Then one day in 2004, I saw the trailer to the “Polar Express” and my faith in the man was destroyed. Tom Hawks looked creepy with his dead eyes and the movie was a disaster in my opinion. Until 2012 we got “Beowulf”, “Christmas Carol” directed by him and “Mars needs Moms” that was produced by him. “Mars needs Moms” was an Epic box-office failure and I believe it made Zemeckis rethink his motion capture career. So in a nutshell, I wanted this film to be awesome. Knowing Denzel, Cheadle, Goodman all have main roles, this should have been the best thing since sliced bread. The premise didn’t look the most exciting but I thought that the story and acting were going to be great.



The Film

The film stars Denzel Washing as a commercial airline pilot named Whip Whitaker. (Who picked that dumb name!). Whip is declared a hero when he saves the passenger on the plane he was flying. In an NTSB investigation Whip’s blood is tested, and alcohol is found in his blood. Whips role as a hero is turned on a dime, as he is now charged for manslaughter.



My Thoughts

I really wanted the movie to be great. I went in with high expectations only to be let down. Performances from Washington, Leo, Cheadle and Greenwood were all ok. There was nothing specular about them or their roles at all. Flight could have been totally recasted and it would have had the same negative turnout. The only actor that gives it the most expected and highly anticipated A game was John Goodman. He was hilarious in the movie. The script was very well written, but the direction only hit on a moderate level. You couldn’t tell Robert Zemeckis directed this. It didn’t have heart or soul and fell very cold. At first I was uninspired by the CGI in the movie, but after thinking about it and watching the trailer a couple times. I feel that was very well done. The movie on a technical level is superb.



My Recommendation

Flight is a movie that you should walk in with no expectations. a good movie but it is far from great.

Recommended: Check out a matinée or on Blu-ray.

Matt Damon may never return to the big screen as Jason Bourne

The Bourne trilogy, as we know it, is what made Matt Damon an action star for our generation. The first film was directed by Doug Liman and the next two installments directed by Paul Greengrass. The series was later rebooted with Jeremy Renner in the lead. Matt Damon was supposed to return to the famous role, but relations between Universal and Greengrass soured. Matt has said that “he will only return to the character if Greengrass returns.”

“From what I understand, ‘The Bourne Legacy’ relives ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ from a different perspective. Because they use ‘Ultimatum’ actors and characters, that means that we would have to continue a story that wasn't our creation and we’d have to acknowledge that in any Bourne movie that we’d do. And that makes it really tough.” - Matt Damon Movieline quote.

I might be in the minority here, but I’m not a huge fan of the Greengrass directed Bourne films. Watching them is like getting drunk without alcohol because of the shaky camera shots. In Cam Sky’s perfect world, Doug Liman would announce that he is the director of a new Jason Bourne movie. I absolutely love the first film! If Liman would return to the series it would be a dream come true. I’m not saying Greengrass’s films are bad, they are just driven by action packed, thriller sequences. Maybe not for everyone but, they do have great turnouts for each new release. So, who can blame them. I haven’t seen the Bourne Legecy with Jermeny Renner in the starring role, because the reviews didn’t look too great.

I think these films are due for a re-visit!
