This isn’t a review. I thought about doing that, but then realised that I’d be writing about games that are 10, 8 and 6 years old that have been reviewed to death already, and aren’t in need of another internet page telling you what the stories are about. Instead I’m going to recap my time with the HD collection and aim to give an idea on how I felt playing these again, and also how they stack up by today’s standards, especially as we now have the Hitman Absolution in the mix.

Getting one thing out of the way to start with, I love the Hitman franchise and was very excited about being able to go through the three I played on the PS2 again, so this is going to be biased. I’m not a hoarder when it comes to consoles and games, my original purchases have long since been consigned to the 2nd hand racks of my local game store after they were no longer regular inhabitants of the disc drive, but sometimes you drag up some nostalgia misted memories and think “I wish I could play that again”. The HD collections mean those thoughts can be fulfilled with a spruced up version that is going to make you realise either what joyous experiences you’ve deprived yourself of, or how you had pushed the horror of decade old gaming from your mind.

If you saw my Twitter feed over the last couple of months you’d have seen snapshots of my progress through the games, I’ll use a couple to punctuate this article. I even considered just joining them all together and posting them to write this piece but be happy I didn’t, it ended up being more like the random thoughts of a serial killer (my non-gaming followers must think I’m insane).

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

The first foray in to the world of Agent 47 for console owners. Brilliant at the time for it’s multiple choice ways of eliminating the targets in the 20 levels available, it really shows how far we’ve come in 10 years. I can’t knock the work done on the collection, it’s identical to the original in every respect barring the upscaling, even down to the fact that none of your options are saved so you have to reset everything each time you load your progress. The AI hates you with a passion, the suspicion meter rockets up if you dare break in to a fast walk within half a mile of a guard, creeping up behind someone to fibrewire them takes longer than the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (extended editions) watched back to back, and don’t even think about using anaesthetic because it only works for the time it takes to steal the victims clothes. Textures are sparse, levels a little bland outside the main target areas and all actions have to be precise to pull them off.

It is a lesson in unforgiving game design. But it reduces frustration by allowing you to save anywhere in a level, altering the number of uses available as you go up the difficulty scale. It also has (for me) one of the best levels in the whole series, “Basement Killing”. Set in the Petronas Towers in Malaysia you have to infiltrate the basement of a hotel to take out a computer hacker and was the first level I ever achieved silent assassin rank on where I successfully used all the techniques to get the result: distraction, disguises and a fire axe to the head.

Yes, the gameplay is clunky and a bit slow. Yes, you have to be bang on with every action or you’re going to be spotted and have to shoot your way out (not easy in this one). And yes, you have to apply a bit of lateral thinking to counteract the AI and it’s amazing capability to see through all your disguises (and walls). But there is still a playable game in there, and one that can be very rewarding if you put the time in.

Hitman: Contracts

The second console game and a dramatic improvement over the first. The engine is essentially the same but was refined and tweaked to make it more playable than the first and it shows from the opening menu screen. The biggest differences are the increase in the size of the levels and the number of NPCs on screen at any time. There’s no slow build to this, the first assassination contract level has you infiltrating a party in an abattoir and shows off the number of people as soon as you get in there, and it still looks pretty good today. Because this game is told in flashbacks so the developers could capture some key missions from the original Hitman: Codename 47, there’s not a linking story to all the scenarios, and there are only 12 levels, but the size and nature of them make up for it. Some of the issues with the first game are removed, you can creep faster and the syringe actually works for knocking out innocents, levels aren’t as sparse (though you do repeat one), AI is better, but the precision is still needed to pull off all actions (like accidentally looking through a keyhole 6 times when you meant to drag a body before that patrolling SWAT member finds you).

You can also tell from the increased NPCs that the focus for Contracts is more on using crowds to get to your objective, and the environment starts to become a part of the assassination as well. There are more chances to pick up random items and have that degree of interactivity than before, particularly during “Beldingford Manor”, an assassination that takes place in an English country home where the additional attention to detail stands out. Firstly, you need to have the right weapon with the right uniform and whether you’re holding a shotgun at ease or ready to fire will alert guards; poison, pistols, fuel canisters, knives and chimneys can all be used to take out your targets; distractions come in the form of TV signals, explosions and even horse poisoning; and it’s all wrapped up in an neatly designed and executed level.

IO Interactive also added a series of training levels so you could practice stealth, target shooting and timed area attacking, along with a lovely glass cabinet to display all your collected weapons. The ability to select what items you take in to a contract with you is the same as the first game, and the greater variety prompted replaying levels to make sure I collected as many as possible, including trying to escape with a minigun in the Leon inspired section. A shorter game but still very good, Contracts is definitely worth the time to revisit.

Hitman: Blood Money

The last game from the collection. This had already been released on the Xbox 360 so an HD makeover wasn’t difficult, and they did save the best till last (of the 128 bit generation at least). This is the third copy of the game I’ve owned having bought it twice on the PS2 due to a damaged disc through overuse, and I can honestly say I enjoyed it almost as much as the first time I booted it up in 2006. From the beginning it’s clear they are going for much more detailed environments and variety of gameplay, the inclusion of a tutorial mission highlighted that they wanted to open the game up to more casual gamers, and the interfaces are tailored more for consoles than PC (the text is humongous in comparison to the last two games and is almost off putting). They added a throwing mechanic for distraction (though not the sublime weapon throwing skills of Absolution sadly), 47’s body responds to his situation through automatically hiding weapons behind his back if someone gets too close, and accidents are introduced so that you can pass all assassinations off as unfortunate events. The accidents are crucial in making sure you aren’t spotted because a notoriety rating will follow you through the story making it harder for you to blend in with the crowds and the NPCs will know who you are which gives the game a bit of a dynamic difficulty.

The gameplay is honed to perfection, hostage taking and body hiding become valuable ways of getting to your target cleanly and quietly, and taking time to think about your approach is rewarding. Take “A New Life” for example, you have to wipe out an FBI protected mob informant in a suburban neighbourhood. The map is small, there are lots of agents wandering around, civilians can see you from nearly everywhere, and it feels impossible at first glance. Spend a bit of time exploring and suddenly you’ve maybe 5 or 6 different ways to get the job done, and that’s without bringing in specific weapons you’ve upgraded in the mission briefing. Even this time round I found a new way to poison the target and make it look like his wife had drowned during a drunken swim.

Without doubt this is the best of the collection and it really rams that home when you’ve been through the other two first. Weapon hoarding is included like the other games and taking whatever you want as equipment in to each level promotes replay value and different play styles (remote anti-personnel mines are the most useful tool ever!). Why Absolution ditched this customisation aspect I don’t know, it’s the one thing I didn’t realise how much I’d missed until now. I’d recommend playing Absolution after the HD collection if you haven’t touched any of them yet, the leap from Blood Money to this generation is staggering and gives a great view on the design progression from over the 10 year span.

I said at the beginning, this isn’t a review so I can’t give it a score, but I can tell you that today (10th April 2013) this collection is on the EU store, on offer on PS+ for less than £10 ($15). Do it. Now.
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is hitting shelves this October 29th and members of the guild are shouting yo ho! In ACIV: BF You'll sail as Captain Edward Kenway on your vessel, Jackdaw, and ravage the Caribbean in 1715. In the Golden Age of piracy you'll spend forty percent of the game on the water with many cannon battles. The game will feature three main cities; Havana, Kingston, and Nassau, which reside under Spanish, English and pirate influence respectively.

Players will be able to experience the true Assassin's Creed with a more non-linear approach to completing missions and objectives. Assassin's will be prompted with many different options to overcome their quests.
The player will encounter jungles, forts, ruins and small villages and the world is being built to allow players much more freedom, such as allowing players to engage, board, and capture passing ships and swimming to nearby beaches in a seamless fashion. In addition, the hunting system has been retained from Assassin's Creed III, allowing the player to hunt on land, and harpoon in the water.

Your ship, the Jackdaw, will be a very important upgradable character throughout the game. With Captain Kenway at your fingertips you can now explore the depths of the ocean in a new underwater experience added to the series. The player will also have access to a spyglass, similiar to the camera of Far Cry 3, that will let the player examine details of distant ships, such as their cargo and strength, and help determine if an island still has animals to hunt, treasures or high points to climb. Kenway will also be able to recruit assassins and crew as Ezio once did in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

The series Cowboy Bebop has always had a presence in my life. My older brother was a huge fan of it when it came out, and growing up I always marveled at the few glimpses I could catch staying up late to watch Adult Swim or perhaps when they were airing the movie.
I had never watched all 26 episodes, however, until last weekend. I enjoyed the series so much that I told myself; "If I don't see the last episode, I never have to stop watching." Last weekend I found myself on an especially long bus ride, and after watching episode 24 and 25 on my Kindle, I decided, what the hell, might as well. And so I finished one of the best anime of all time.

And, arguably, one of the greatest shows of all time. It's short and sweet, 26 episodes, not too much to oversaturate the characters but just enough that you can get a real feel for them and their relationships. It's a very comforting and satisfying feeling - you never feel that the series is getting stale, each episode has it's own unique quirks that make it amazing. With things like Ubisoft's plan to release an Assasin's Creed each year and, you know, every episode of the office since Steve Carell left, Cowboy Bebop is a shining example of a team of creators wonderfully accomplishing their goal, and leving it at that.

The film, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, is less polished than the rest of the series. Rather than following the formula of the show of a simple, yet engaging plot, the Cowboy Bebop movie has so many plot points that missing one line of dialogue can leave you confused with the rest of the movie. It also gets a little long in the tooth by the time Vincent and Spike have their final showdown, clocking in at about an hour and 47 minutes, but feeling much much longer.
If you haven't watched Cowboy Bebop, I highly recommend it. It's perfectly crafted - each episode has a musical theme and every one of the series' fight scenes is coordinated to match the music playing. It's incredibly subtle, and works to make every episode worth watching over and over again, if only to listen to the audio.
If you find yourself all dried out on Game of Thrones or Doctor Who or House of Cards, or you're just trying to fill the gap between now and the new season of Arrested Development, please please please take the time to enjoy this shining example of television. You won't regret the decision.
We're unsure if your bow can be upgraded or not but that arrow sure looks fancy. Stealth-based games like Hitman and Assassin's Creed require a certain essence of patience, strategy, and coordination. Eidos has stated that Thief will take those skills to a new level. This screenshot is taken at a moment where Garret is aiming at the fire-pit; could those fancy arrows manipulate the flame somehow? Water-arrows?
Watching NPCs will take up quite a bit of gameplay as Garret has to learn who his targets are without getting too close. He'll have to time his movements precisely and figure out ways of distracting his targets.
Agile and acrobatic has a cat-burglar Garret will be able to take out victims from up above Sam Fisher style. The only worry is finding the right moment to strike. Be wary of nearby opponents as you could be in their line of sight.

Lock-picking is as crucial as breathing for a thief. As Garret you'll be up to your neck in broken lock-picks and fickle tumblers. The harder the lock the better the spoils.

Close quarters hand-to-hand combat looks prevalent in Thief. Stealing an enemy's weapon could serve useful but timing is everything. You can clear a room with your skill in murder or sneak through without a whisper.
Garret seems to be taking to the rooftops in this image. There is no doubt that Eidos will take cues from Assassin's Creed but the real question is how much will they imitate?
There is no telling what Garret is unleashing and learning in this image but the object definitely reminds me of stars and galaxies, but looks like a cipher. I'm assuming this piece belongs to a larger puzzle of the main quest.
Shadows and blind corners are a thief's best friends. There is no doubt that many missions you are tasked with will place you in highly populated rooms and areas. It's your challenge to overcome such impossible possibilities.

From the looks of it cinematic executions could be used to add a bit more flare in your homicidal gameplay. Different weapons would trigger different methods.
Many people just did not believe that Far Cry 3 would have a 1980's themed arcade shooter with a sci-fi twist. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is indeed a thing. Thanks to a NeoGAF poster these screens are available for us to shove in the face of the non-believers. You can visit the website here where you can enter the Konami code and destroy the whole site. You can watch the trailer, and you can also view the achievement list.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has not been officially announced, priced, dated, or mocked up for any platform, however we're led to believe this is an arcade title.
Official Press Release:

Call of Duty fans are set to receive another premium offering of Downloadable Content with Call of Duty: Black Ops II Uprising on April 16. The game`s second, epic DLC pack of the year from award-winning studio Treyarch and Activision, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, will be available first, exclusively on Xbox Live for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft beginning on April 16, with other platforms to follow. Call of Duty: Black Ops II Uprising will include four new exotic multiplayer maps, plus an exciting new Zombies experience called "Mob of the Dead" that takes players to Alcatraz with four of the actors behind some of Hollywood`s most iconic mobsters, including Ray Liotta, Chazz Palminteri, Joe Pantoliano, and Michael Madsen.

"With Uprising, the team has really outdone itself again," said Mark Lamia, Treyarch`s Studio Head. "In addition to creating four amazing new multiplayer maps, the Studio has been hard at work on the Zombies front to surpass what we accomplished with `Call of the Dead.` What they`ve done this time around is nothing Zombies fans have seen before - and if you don`t believe me, just wait until you get into Purgatory."

Following tradition of the original Call of Duty: Black Ops fan-favorite Zombies mode "Call of the Dead," Call of Duty: Black Ops II Uprising`s wildly creative new "Mob of the Dead" Zombies experience finds the four prohibition-era mobsters, Billy Handsome (Liotta), Al "The Weasel" Arlington (Pantoliano), Salvatore "Sal" DeLuca (Palminteri), and Michael "Finn" O`Leary (Madsen) serving time in Alcatraz Prison, only to discover that being behind bars is the least of their problems. With plans to break out of Alcatraz foiled by the rise of the undead, the quartet of inmates will have to lean on their mob-derived skills with firearms, blunt instruments and improvised weaponry as they battle the zombies infesting and overrunning the island. In order to survive, players must work their way through the steel cells and aging concrete buildings while fighting off a multitude of zombified prisoners and guards trapped on the island with them. Additionally, if a player becomes an unfortunate victim, "Mob of the Dead`s" new feature known as "Purgatory" sends players into the afterlife. This new twist on Zombies gameplay is ripe with its own set of objectives, and offers fans a truly new and unique experience.

Uprising also delivers another four new, exotic and diverse multiplayer maps set around the globe for fans to jump into. "Magma" is a modern Japanese village with volcanic eruptions carving multiple paths throughout the town. "Encore" takes place in the aftermath of a deserted London music festival and leaves numerous opportunities for run-and-gun, close quarters combat. "Vertigo" is a futuristic high rise in India housing a high-tech lab featuring dizzying vistas and multi-tiered pathways. Finally, "Studio" is a contemporary remake of "Firing Range," a fan-favorite multiplayer map from the original Call of Duty: Black Ops. "Studio" is a Hollywood movie back lot with a variety of cinematic themes that range from Sci-Fi to the Old West.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II Uprisingwill be available first, exclusively on Xbox Live for 1200 Microsoft Points on April 16. The Uprising DLC Map Pack is also included in the Call of Duty: Black Ops II DLC Season Pass*, where fans can purchase all four epic DLC Map Packs planned for the year, and also receive the Nuketown Zombies bonus map, and an exclusive in-game calling card as part of the discounted bundle offered at a suggested retail price of $49.99 or 4000 Microsoft Points.
After Sony unveiled the Playstation 4 the ominous sound of defeat seemed to overshadow Microsoft. An April event was scheduled by Microsoft to showcase their new console but was pushed back to May. We already know that Microsoft has dev-kits out and about with custom zebra printed cases and controllers; so that if leaked images surface Microsoft can track the leak. There are also reports that the next Xbox will have dual APUs.

Rumours have spread since the beginning of 2013 that the next Xbox would require constant online connection but now Kotaku has two more sources that can be added to the fold. The sources claim that Project Durango; the codename for the next console, will have to have internet connection to start games and apps but will be able to tolerate dropped connections.

The source told Kotaku, "Unless something has changed recently, Durango consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used."

"If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started," the source continued. "If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time--currently three minutes, if I remember correctly--the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."

The PS4 will not require an online connection to start or run games, Sony has confirmed.
No gaming console ever has.

This rumour centers around a feature that is definitely a deal-breaker for most gamers so Microsoft needs to take careful consideration with this. If indeed this is a huge sodium overload then all could be well as the next Xbox is speculated to up-to-par to Sony's PS4.

What do you think? Would you buy the next Xbox console if you are forced into chains with your internet provider?

The above video is my take on a tribute to the Bioshock Trilogy set to "Back Where I Belong" by Baroness. After completing Infinite earlier this week I was addicted to its ending and what it meant for the series. I took it upon myself to create this video in honour of the stories laying within its gameplay and the conspiracy theories concerning its latest entry. I love Irrational Games' world and I hope this video open up a few eyes. *SPOILERS WITHIN*

Google’s Nexus 7 was quite the hit when it was revealed last year. The small powerhouse was a pleasant surprise for most. I am personally fond of the 7 inch tablet, and have been very happy with mine since launch. Reuters reports that Google along with hardware manufacturer ASUS are planning to release the next Nexus 7 this July.

The revised Nexus 7 is likely to feature a larger screen than its predecessor by reducing the size of the bezel surrounding the screen. The new screen could even come with a higher resolution than the previous model in an effort to differentiate themselves from other tablet giants Apple and Amazon.

According the Reuters the new Nexus 7 will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor instead of an Nvidia sourced chip like the previous model’s Tegra 3 chip. The reason for the switch was mainly due to power reasons as reported by Reuters. Could this mean that Google is also trying to gain greater battery life than similarly sized and priced tablets, or will they be trying something more aggressive to entice new users to their hardware?

Google is also expecting the new Nexus 7 to sell far better than the previous generation. Google expects to ship around 8 million Nexus 7s in the second half of the year. The estimate of sales from the current device in that same time period is about 4.6 million. The Nexus 7 is a very capable device that delivers on all fronts. It is exciting to see that Google is getting serious about this platform, and they will most likely detail this hardware at their annual I/O event.
Bioshock Infinite is the third game in the series that’s previously had us explore the underwater delights of the city of Rapture in 1960 as Jack, a plane crash survivor who discovers the city as it’s experiencing a civil war. It gave gamers the opportunity to experience the notions of choice and freewill through its lauded story telling, as much as through its approach to environmental design and combat. It is, rightly, one of this generations classics, only narrowly beaten to the top spot by Aliens: Colonial Marines (kidding!).

The second game, cleverly named Bioshock 2, is set in Rapture 8 years after the first and you play as Delta, one of the Big Daddy’s. It wasn’t as well received by fans due to development being farmed out from Irrational Games to 2K Marin, but still scored highly and is a great game in its own right, as well as complimenting the original. For the third game we move back to the original developer Irrational Games, and to the airborne city of Columbia in 1912 where you’re playing as Booker Dewitt, a down on his luck tough guy who’s taken a kidnapping job to pay his debts off. The target is Elizabeth, a young girl held in the city that your employers want delivered to New York as soon as possible.

Things start sedately with Booker making his way to Columbia and exploring the city that’s in the throws of a celebration day, which gives you ample opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of what feels like a normal, everyday metropolis-in-the-sky. There are people out for picnics or shopping or dining at the local café, and you can listen in to every conversation happening to give you a better understanding of the city’s inhabitants. Audio voxphones are lying around (and cunningly hidden) that fill out the backstory for certain characters, kinetoscopes can be used to relay short movie clips on key events in Columbia’s history, and telescopes are available to check out the view and the impressive landmarks. It genuinely feels like a city and draws you in so that strangely you don’t notice it, you just accept that it’s there (our own Dexter had some thoughts on this too). Part of accepting the city for what it is comes from the distraction that there is something wrong with the population, and fairly quickly it becomes clear there are tensions brewing that are going to get in the way of your hunt for the girl. I could go on and on about the pacing, setup and how the story arcs, the Songbird, handymen and quantum mechanics, but that’s just going to ruin it, so let’s get to the technicalities of it all (and you can also read more story detail here, but DO NOT click this link until you’ve finished the game).

When I booted it up for the first time I was disappointed to see the Unreal Engine logo. As a PS3 fan I know this means screentear galore for any cross platform game, which I can live with, but would rather not have to. Getting to the main menu didn’t do anything to change my opinion, just moving between options screens caused some hideous tears to appear, and it’s the same with some of the cutscenes during the game. However, Irrational have included a v-sync option in the menu so make sure it’s enabled because it means that when you’re in the thick of the game the images stays as clear as possible, though you may suffer some slowdown or dropped frames. I didn’t see anything during my first playthrough and had no problems with image quality during the sections I was in control, though cutscenes did still have issues. If you prefer a maximum frame rate at the cost of visual fidelity then leave the box unticked. And whilst this is built with Unreal Engine, there’s a lot of customisation in there to enable the buoyancy of the buildings, the longer draw distances needed for the environments, and the characterisation of the city. It’s all very good looking. Everything is done in the same semi-cartoon/cell shaded style as Bioshock where the artists have gone for a degree of believability without striving for hyper-realism, and the attention to detail is phenomenal on both the NPCs and the surroundings.

On the audio side the game defaults to DTS through my amp, something that doesn’t happen often as most games seem to opt for the Dolby Digital track. It sounds superb with every noise crisp and clear, and the volume scaling based on distance from an in game audio source is excellent, you really notice that getting closer makes things louder (unlike Crysis 3 where the enemies all have the same volume voice regardless of where you are in relation to them). The only thing wrong with the audio track is when in game noise and voxphones clash. For example, I was in one section of the game listening to a discovered voxphone (which can be repeated and played at will, but not stopped) when I walked in to the cue point for a tannoy announcement. The voxphone overrode the announcement and I missed what was being said. This happened several times until I learnt to stand still through every audio recording I found, even though I’d prefer to continue my obsessive-compulsive bin ransacking whilst absorbing the backstory.

In terms of gameplay, what you expect is what you get. Forwards, backwards, left and right turns, jumping and strafing, it’s all there. Combat is straight forward and effective, and with the ability to hold only two weapons at any time you find yourself swapping them around probably more regularly than if they were all stored in a massive invisible backpack. They’re also scattered liberally around so you’re never wanting for a new one, and nothing feels rare or unique so you don’t mind tossing one away on a whim. Health is back to the old skool style of pickups as either health packs or food items, there’s no hide and regenerate in this game. There are also the vigors which are the 1912 equivalent of plasmids and are powered by salts found lying around. These can be swapped in and out through a radial menu on the L2 button, and you can change between the two selected with a tap of the same button to combine the effects on the unfortunate NPCs (the full vigors list is here, keeping this review as spoiler-free as possible). L1 and R1 are your vigour and weapon fire buttons, with iron sights being on R3 which is slightly disconcerting, particularly when you keep meaning to aim down the sights at distant enemy and end up wasting your vigour salts on the fresh air in front of you. It takes a bit of getting used to, and when you’ve adapted it is very effective, with scoping really only being used for the sniper rifles.

On top of the ranged weapons there’s the melee skyhook which has the dual purpose of transporting you round the sky lines. These are rollercoaster style traversal rails that link sections of the city together and allows not only quick movement to new places, but opens up combat options as well. A press of jump whilst looking at the rail leaps you on to it, you can control speed and direction, and also shoot whilst zipping along, then dismount on the nearest enemy to send them flying. Great fun.
There are some variations in the enemies encountered, but not as much as I expected, the majority are just humans with guns. It works for the story but means you sometimes feel a bit like you’re throwing grenades at fish in a barrel, but then it ramps up the difficulty for “boss” situations and you wonder why everything is ineffective as you’re chipping away at the health. Luckily, there is no frustration involved because Irrational have created the most effective AI ever. Elizabeth, the one you came to kidnap, unsurprisingly becomes your travelling companion and she is fantastic. Forget the annoyance that was Shiva in RE5 or any of the abominations in Operation Raccoon City, if you need cash, ammo, health, salts or just for her to get out of the way, she’s on it like a car bonnet (car hood for the US readers, though that doesn’t rhyme anywhere near as well). Elizabeth even spots items in the environment for you to pick up and rings them with a small blue halo in case you’ve missed the fact they’re glowing 10 times brighter than everything else. She is genius. She is also the walking equivalent of a vita chamber so that if you die you come back to life with the same progress, only slightly lighter in cash and energy. I don’t know if I can get this across in text, but the implementation of her is brilliant, you feel like the best co-op partner in the world has your back without it becoming contrived or cloying.

So did I enjoy the game? I think it’s clear I did, and it’s easily the best game I’ve played this year so far. Why? The story. Everything comes back to how the story unfolds through the game and how it makes you think and feel at the end. Taking the time to discover all the little touches in the game that give you more knowledge of the world you’re visiting is well worth doing, it rewards you with a deeper immersion in the experience, something that other games manage to turn in to a grind. I shouldn’t be surprised though because that’s exactly how I was with Bioshock, and Irrational have elicited the same wonder and joy with this game. I can’t give this full marks though, there are three things that stop that:

I bought the Premium Edition and it’s not exactly the best for content considering the price (art book, board game piece for something I’m never going to buy, key ring, DLC codes, digital soundtrack);

I enjoyed Infinite so much I bought the season pass and got the bonus starting items for my second playthrough only to find that it didn’t work and I’ve been waiting for a fix;

a day one patch for a single player game.

Based on these small detractors I rate it £55/£60 ($83/$91) and strongly recommend that everyone buys it and experiences one of the best videogame stories I think you’ll ever play. There's a high level of replayability here because you will want to go back to Columbia and examine things in more detail, and there's the talked about 1999 mode which makes things very tough (which unlocks when you finish the game, or input the Konami code). As a final note, all through the credits I was thinking about what I’d just done and how it made me feel (not a regular response to an FPS), and the main thought was “I want to play Bioshock now”. Well done Irrational, you didn’t even have to ask me kindly.
In horrific news today that is sending a huge rift through the Force Kotaku reports that Disney has shut down LucasArts studio indefinitely and has laid off all of its staff.

Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313 are cancelled, however Star Wars 1313 can still be saved with licensing (here's your chance Obsidian). Disney will still use the LucasArts name to license games, but the studio is no more.

An exerpt from Disney's statement:
“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

Disney acquired LucasArts last fall and ever since then rumours began of LucasArts enacting a hiring-freeze and holding off on project announcements; which many staff saw as the beginning of the end. Today, it's official: the studio that brought Jedi and Sith so many adventures and much entertainment is no more.

May the Force be with all of the staff and their families. We wish them luck in their futures.

I hope this is worth it to Disney because this action is certain to turn long-time fans to the Dark Side; myself included. I was/am extremely excited for 1313 and I wish for it to be picked up by a studio with Star Wars experience. It is sad to see such a great studio end so abruptly.
This new version has been rumoured for next-gen consoles and appears to be in its alpha stages.

Sources claim development is "not going well" although Bethesda and id Software remain strong behind its project.

"An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," Bethesda's marketing boss Pete Hines said in a new statement.

"As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know."

This good news comes with some heavy baggage as Zenimax has cancelled RAGE 2 and "downsized" its future DLC releases for the original because of poor sales.

Now, all id staff are working on Doom 4.

I loved RAGE. It had a great atmosphere and design that was conceptually synonymous with id software. I believe RAGE failed because of poor marketing and a cluttered release window. It was a solid FPS but ulimately it was too grand of an idea and felt empty at times.
After a long hiatus from updating, Torchlight 2's developers Runic Games have released mod tools for their beloved ARPG.
Nicknamed GUTS, the new development tool lets you modify almost everything about the game, "from item and skill balance, to level layouts, animations, quests, and much more," according to a post on Runic's website.
"GUTS mods can be shared with your friends, and multiplayer games using mods can be found in the modded games lobby," the post continues. "In addition, A new launcher lets you customize which mods are currently active."
The new patch also contains in-game content such as new monsters, new weapons, and new pets - including the "Headcrab!"

The Headcrab's name is, irrevocably, Lamarr.

In celebration of the release of GUTS, Runic has dropped the price of the game 50% to 9.99, which you can purchase either on Steam of through Runic's website.

Have you been dying for more Grand Theft Auto V news? Well thanks to the fine folks over at Rockstar Games, we now have 10 new screenshots that we can analyse and comb through. Give em a look and enjoy. Please keep in mind that Rockstar clearly stated that these screenshots are all from current gen consoles. For one, this game looks awfully good for current gen. Secondly, is Rockstar making a next gen version of the game? Is that partly why the game was delayed until September? One can only hope.

Maybe I am just being picky, but Rockstar, where is the brake handles? That question aside, this might show a new gameplay mechanic. As you can see in the background the cops are chasing Trevor, and they are hanging off of the side of the vehicle. Will they be able to jump on to your car if they get close enough? Or will this be a new ability that the players can use similar to Just Cause 2? Either way this should be fun to have in game.

Now here is an interesting picture. There appears to be a filter on the photo giving it the color affect as well as the lens flare on the tail lights. Although this could have been done just for the heck of it, another possibility comes to mind. Will GTA V have a film editor where you can record gameplay and create your own pictures? Just imagine taking a screenshot of your awesome stunt jump and editing the picture to your hearts desire. Awesome.

Here is a great shot to show off the vast world of Grand Theft Auto V. You can see a dirt road trailing up the left side of the screen. A great hill for a bike ride I presume. As far as you can see there are no sky scrapers or big buildings. Which means that Los Santos is somewhere else, maybe over the farthest mountain. Remember Rockstar did say that this game map would be larger than GTA: San Andreas, GTA IV and Red Red Redemption all put together.

You all know how it goes. You hop into your newly acquired green Infernus and speed down the road. Burning cars litter the road behind you. Just another day in your GTA world. It looks like escaping from your carnage wont be any easier this time around. This time Police helicopters have attached spotlights to keep track of your every movement. As we saw in a previous screenshot, cops can also use laser assisted weapons to shoot from helicopters. Should make for some excited cop chases!
This isn't the first time we've seen a mini gun in a GTA game, but still this image gets me very excited. For one, look at the fire effect on the tree. Is there going to be a progressive fire system like Far Cry 2? The fire seems to have spread off of the cop car and is now engulfing the the tree in flames. This could be a new game changer. Also, it is important to note that Franklin is wearing a bandanna to cover his face. Could this be a new ability to help mask your identity from the police?
Skydiving. We've all be there before. But this time around it looks like it will be cranked up to 11. Maybe the sky level will be much, much higher. The plane above looks like there is a door in the back where you can jump out of. Will this be a new mini game? We shall surely see.

Scuba diving will be a new feature in GTA V, but how in-depth will it be? I can only hope that there will be a plethora of hidden collectibles or treasures. Hopefully just treasures, because I feel that searching for 300 hidden sea mollusks in a coral reef would be a tad bit tedious. Either way I want the under water feature to be fleshed out.

Just look at those colors. "Would you just look at it?" Sunsets look to be a promising vista in this game. The lighting effects are superb. Also as you can see in the background, a couple of buildings are under renovation. I don't know if this will do anything to change up the gameplay or if it is just a part of their world but it will be interesting to see.

This is just an awesome screenshot. Here you can see the protagonist Michael leaning on his Buffalo. Is he waiting for the next mission to start, or will this be the Fallout 3 version of sitting on a chair? The only other thing here is the attention to detail. Random items litter the alleys, and electricity meters are on the side of the building. But this is nothing new to the talented people at Rockstar Games.

And we saved the best for last. Not only is this a beautiful shot of the pier and the buildings in the distance, but you can see the dynamic weather system is in full effect. Lightning strikes in the distance and the sea is being stirred up by the storm. That water sure is pretty. Looks like we will have waves this time. Maybe their will be a mini game for putting out fires from lightning strikes!
Since completing Bioshock Infinite late last Friday night, I have been deep in thought about the stellar and mind blowing ending. Here in this Spoiler filled article I will lay all my theories out on the line for you to view. I had spent a significant amount of time trying to locate extra Voxphones to unravel more information about the story. So if you have made your way through the story without finding these Voxphones, then I will help to fill in the details for you. If you have not beaten Bioshock Infinite yet, please bookmark this page for future reading! I think you will like what you are going to read.

SPOILERS START NOW
First things first, Booker DeWitt is Comstock. The reason Elizabeth drowned you in the river was because Comstock was born from the Baptism in the river. In one universe, Booker goes to the river to be Baptised and rejects the Baptism. His lives with his guilt for his misdeeds towards the Indians, which leads to gambling, debt, he has a daughter and the mother dies during child birth, and in order to wipe away the debt he sells his daughter to Robert Lutece. Of course, we see Comstock taking Anna DeWitt into his own universe, and she loses her pinky in the closing portal.

Comstock is born from every universe where Booker chooses to be Baptised. He changes his course of life, meets Rosalind Lutece, and creates Columbia with her Quantum Levitation. His ego gets the better of him and he takes the basis of Christianity and twists it to his favor. This gains him many followers and he is able to populate Columbia. Comstock prophesies to all these followers that his child will pave the way to an even better world. Problem is that all his time working with Rosalind Lutece on her Quantum Levitation, and subsequent parallel universes, caused him to become sterile. It was at this time that he jumped into the Universe of Booker the gambler and took his daughter.

Comstock tries to murder the Luteces because they know the truth about Elizabeth. At this point, they go back to the other universe to get Booker in an attempt right this wrong that they have made. Booker is brought over and immediately looses his memory, due to the fact that in this universe he has no memories of what happened after refusing Baptism, since after that moment only Comstock existed. He then begins to make up an existence and purpose based on some small pieces of his old universe that he is able to hold onto, "Bring us the girl, wipe away the debt."

The Lutece twins are actually not twins. They are in fact the same person. In one universe, Momma Lutece has a boy named Robert Lutece. In another universe, Momma Lutece has a girl named Rosalind Lutece. Through their work with Parallel Universes, the two decide to live together in the Columbia Universe.

The reason why Elizabeth has the power to tear open rifts is because her pinky was left in a different universe. Rosiland Lutece said something about this in one of the voxphones.

The name Bioshock Infinite is a reference to the fact that there are Infinite universes within the game

The scar on Booker's right hand saying "AD" stands for Anna DeWitt. The Lutece's refer to it as his hairshirt. Back in the day, hardcore Christians would wear scratchy and uncomfortable shirts under their clothes to punish themselves for whatever they believe their sins are. They wore them as a painful reminder. So, DeWitt scared his hand as a painful reminder of the day when he gave his daughter away.

The constant use of the song "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" is a pretty obsious metaphor for the whole game. When the game is over, the circle is finally broken.

When the Luteces have you flip a coin at the beginning of the game, you should assume that these Two have asked the other Bookers in other Universes the same question and marked it on the sandwich board. So, if you count the number of tally marks you will see that this is actually the 122nd time that they have tried to break the chain of events. Also, whenever you ring the bells at the top of the lighthouse in the very beginning of he game, you ring the bells once, twice, twice. One Two Two. 122.

The choice between which necklace Elizabeth should wear is an interesting thing. The game gives you this seemingly important choice, and makes you wait for that moment when the game reveals what effect this choice will have on the universe but it never happens. This is interesting. I think what Irrational Games was trying to portray is the illusion of choice. What you should take away from it is the idea that no matter what decision you make, all the parallel universes bring you to the same place. The outcome will ultimately not be changed.

After the credits, you see Booker back in his office. The newspaper indicates that it is the same day that he would have given Anna away. But there is no knocking at the door. The way Booker says Anna's name, like there is some question in his mind as to wether or not it is real, tells me that this is the same Booker that we have been playing all along. All the other Elizabeths faded away at the end of the game, so maybe Elizabeth brought Booker to the new universe that had been created where Comstock never gets to exist and never takes Anna. A world where Booker is now completely ready to be a good and loving Father after learning all the things that it means to be a Father while he was in Columbia.

------------
Rapture is another Parallel universe

This is a theory that passed me by until today. Of course I saw the Rapture part, but I thought that was a clever nod to the original game. However, Elizabeth says that this is "one possible universe." So if this is true, then in another universe, the Comstock version of Booker became Andrew Ryan and created an underwater version of Columbia. The parallels are too strong to ignore.

Rapture is created to feed Ryan's own ego, much like Columbia was created to feed Comstock's ego.

Plasmids are just Vigors by a different name, same as EVE is just like Salts.

Atlas/Fontaine plays the same role as Daisy Fitzroy.

Dr. Lutece plays the same role as Dr. Tenenbaum.

The biggest Mind Blow is that Elizabeth and the little sisters are the same. Elizabeth is like one large and powerful Little Sister. In the original Bioshock, the little sisters were protected by a bunch of Big Daddies. In Bioshock Infinite, Elizabeth is protected by nothing less than the Ultimate Big Daddy, Songbird. Just look at these two pictures of Elizabeth and a little sister. Even the clothing color combination correlates!
Engadget reports that Mark Rein has taken back comments that he previously made about UE4 not working on Wii U. According to Engadget Rein stated that if a developer wanted to scale a UE4 engine game to Wii U they could. UE4 is meant to be scalable to even mobile devices so it seems that it would even be able to be scaled to Wii U. Rein also indicated that UE4 could even be scaled to a current gen system.

“If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen.”

This is welcome news for all of the Wii U fans out there.

Epic games co founder, Mark Rein, spoke quite candidly at GDC about the Wii U and Unreal Engine 4. When asked if Unreal Engine 4 would work on Wii U, Rein is quoted by IGN as laughingly saying: “No.”
This is unwelcome news for Nintendo fans hoping to get the best-looking games on their new consoles. This may not be old news however, because back in December of last year Rein also stated something similar to videogamer.com. In the videogamer.com article Rein states that it isn’t Epics intent to bring UE4 to the Wii U, but that if a developer wanted to port a UE4 game to the Wii U it would still be possible.

Rein confirms that UE3 is more meant for Wii U than the up coming UE4. He states:

"I'll state that I don't think it's our intention to bring Unreal Engine 4 to Wii U, but Unreal Engine 4 is going to be supremely scalable. We'll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could. But Unreal Engine 3 is a really good fit for that platform."

According to IGN, UE4 will be exclusively used on upcoming PC titles as well as the next generation consoles. Which seems to be another stab at the Wii U not being next gen, but rather current gen. Will this be a major misstep for the Wii U, or will fans be just as satisfied playing UE3 games? Eurogamer also reports that the Frostbite 3 engine to be featured in Battlefield 4 and Dragon Age 3 won’t be coming to the Wii U as well. I feel that Nintendo may have missed a big opportunity by not beefing up the hardware in the Wii U to make it more in line with the coming next gen systems from Sony and Microsoft. But, maybe Nintendo’s strong first party line up will be enough for Wii U fans.

Indie developers have been getting a lot more attention lately. It seems as if they aren’t really indie at all, other than the fact that most are run independently of a large publishing conglomerate looming over their every decision. Independent developers have really been able to take shape with this most recent console generation. I think that a big part of indie development’s success comes from Steam and the ability to make a relatively small game, and get it out to a large audience with minimal investment. Why are these developers so important to Playstation, and why has Sony taken such great steps to get these developers on their platforms?

Recent news out of GDC has shown that Sony is deeply invested in indie developers and Sony wants to have them develop for their platforms. The Verge outlines how recently Sony has been making steps to entice indie developers to the Playstation platform by making it easier for them to develop, and release their titles. IGN revealed that when Retro City Rampage developer Brian Provinciano wanted to pitch his game it was much easier to work with Sony and Steam, rather than Microsoft. Develop Online indicated that many developers have come forward stating their optimism for working on the PS4, stating that it will be more inexpensive and accessible that it has ever been before. This was also something that Sony highlighted during their February 20th PS4 reveal by inviting Jonathan Blow to debut his new title The Witness. It seems that Sony has something up their sleeve, and the best part is that it seems to be focused on the hardcore gamer.

Many incredible indie games have hit the Playstation recently with notable standouts including Journey and The Unfinished Swan. Both of these games were stand outs for many game of the year nominations with Journey winning a handful. These types of experiences are made for hardcore gamers, and I think that Sony knows that. They want to show their most passionate fans that they are committed to games as well as other media options arriving on their new console.

Their once was a line between a downloadable indie title, and a Triple-A disc based title, but that line grows continually smaller each day. Gone are the days that a downloadable title is looked down upon as inferior because it is sold at a fraction of the cost, and doesn’t have the hard copy disc. This was something that was quite prevalent at the beginning of the console cycle with the Xbox Live Arcade featuring such titles as Limbo. But, it seems that Microsoft has lost its way with indie devs. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t meant as any sort of fanboy fuel. Microsoft still has released Arcade titles to critical acclaim recently, but it doesn’t seem like their focus is with these indie devs.

Sony is making some big changes to help indie games come to their platform. By making the development, marketing, and release process easier Sony will be able to attract some very unique and interesting games to their platforms. A major part of gaming’s future will be in indie development, and getting these very unique and excellent games in gamers hands is what it is all about. Sony understands the importance of indie games for gamers, and I hope that Microsoft and Nintendo catch on so that no gamer will be left without these experiences.
The Raid 2 (aka Berandal) stars Iko Uwais, Tio Pakusadewo, Putra Arifin Scheunamann, Julie Estelle, Alex Abbad and Roy Marten.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Raid 2:

Picking up right where the first film ends, The Raid 2 follows Rama (Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.

Some of you might be snarking at this article as outdated as Marvel was set to release this 10-disc set last year. The collection contained every Marvel-produced superhero movie so far (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Avengers (Capt, Thor and Avengers in Blu-ray 3D), plus a bonus disc. The problem was someone had forgotten to license the Tessaract-holding suitcase from the movie so the Avengers Assembled never assembled...

Now the suitcase has been altered, the exclusive props and replica files have been added, the extras have been set (“Never-before-seen deleted scenes, extended scenes, featurettes, animatics and more from each film”). At $150 this culmination of superhero scripts is a deal and a half.

He's a huge talent with his interests set on HP Lovecraft's "Of Mountains and Madness" ad he's credited with many hit titles like Hellboy and Mimic. At WonderCon 2013, Del Toro showed off footage from Pacific Rim, which is out this year, but also briefly discussed his filming schedule. He'll direct Crimson Peak first and then he will be working on Dark Universe, aka Justice League Dark, a DC Comics team-up film featuring some of the company’s darker heroes: Swamp Thing, the Demon, Deadman, the Spectre and Zatanna.

Del Toro revealed he’s recently finished the film’s “Bible,” will soon be announcing the screenwriter who’ll work from that bible, and that the film will star John Constantine (the blonde version) who is tasked with recruiting the other members of the team.

Del Toro said,
"On Justice League Dark, or Dark Universe, what we’re doing is we finished the bible. Then we’re going to start the screenplay with a writer we hope we can announce very soon. What I’m doing is the lead character that guides us through that is Constantine. Blonde. He is basically trying to recruit these guys. On Etrigan, I’m using Jason Blood in the time of Merlin. We get to their origin through the story. We don’t make the origin story at the top. We find it out as they each have mysteries to solve. Swamp Thing is at peace with who he is, but Deadman still needs to figure out who shot him. It’s all woven in. When I was a kid, my two favorite characters in the whole DC Universe were Etrigan and Swamp Thing, so I’m in heaven."

The fact that the script hasn't been written and a definite title hasn't been declared just shows where Justice League Dark Universe sets in Del Toro's future timeline. The visually poetic director is infamous for sandbagging projects for years closely editing every detail over many years. If Pacific Rim is a monumental hit it could be an incentive for him to streamline some of his other announced (and not so announced) projects.
