Paranormal Activity 3 Review

Paranormal Activity 3 Review

Pre Conceived Impressions and Expectations
After initially hearing about Paranormal Activities 3 I, like most of you, thought “Oh good lord another one?!”  When my ex-girlfriend dragged me to go see the first I loved the ending and needed more. The second film was awesome in my opinion but most people think the first was best simply because of the obvious, repetitive ambiance.
So walking into this movie I thought it would be awesome.  Running through a personal set of requirements: Set in the 80’s, Check. Best reviews, Check. Good word of mouth, Check. Question was, What could I have to lose?
The Film
The film is a prequel to both of the previous films, that takes place in 1988 and follows Katie and Krissy, as young girls. Two main additions to the cast are their mom and her new boyfriend (Dennis).  Playing out like the previous two movies in which they set up cameras to monitor any unwanted activity.  Keeping in mind the 1980‘s technology. Strange things start happening in the house as the video cameras capture the actions of the demon.  The main story is all about capturing the melodrama between the life of these girls.
My Thoughts
Remember the feeling you had after seeing the jumbled mess of a movie known as “The Hangover 2”?.  While I was watching this it felt that I could predict every move that was going to happen. That sort of feeling is not good to have while watching a horror movie.  The ending felt as if it ripped off the amazing  “The Last Exorcism” produced by Eli Roth. I thought the directing duo of “Catfish” could pull something off very different here. But I felt as if they had their hands tied, as the studio just wanted more of the same while playing it safe.
There are a couple interesting scenes that occur in the movie, like the sheet –babysitter scene or the Bloody Mary scene. The Bloody Mary gave more mythology but less mystery to the demon as you are provided with more of its figure.  The acting in the movie is good and gives audience what is known as “believability” in each scene.  I personally loved the performance of the boyfriend and the young girls.  They as a whole, make each intense moment worth watching!
My Recommendation
Sadly, the film feels like it’s a remake or another directors iteration.  On the other hand, If you love the Paranormal Activity series you will be right at home!  It is a series worth watching but don’t pay for that experience.  Its recommended to borrow them or check out your Netflix listings.  For these reasons I see that Paranormal Activity 3 ranks 6 out of 10 on TechFixations Grading Scale.
Rated - 6/10
Worth $30 for entire series if you havn’t already experienced the goose bumps for yourself!

Cliff Bleszinski leaves Epic Games

Cliff Bleszinski, former design director at Epic Games. That's the new tensing required, as Mr. Bleszinski has left the company he's called home for the last twenty years.

The news comes by way of EpicGames.com. From the company's official post:

"Today we are saying farewell with warm regards to Cliff Bleszinski, who is departing as Epic’s design director to chart the next stage of his career. During the past two decades, Cliff has helped shape many successful games that have captured the imaginations of millions of players around the world. We are grateful for his influence on Epic’s legacy, from the wild adventures “Jazz Jackrabbit” to the visceral combat of “Gears of War"."

Cliffy B, as he's been known publicly, is most well-known for his work on the Gears of War franchise. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Unreal franchise.

An excerpt from his farewell to his colleagues:

"I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager, and outside of my sabbatical last year, I have been going non-stop. I literally grew up in this business, as Mike likes to say. And now that I’m grown up, it’s time for a much needed break.

I will miss the projects, the playtests, the debates, and most importantly, the people. Epic only hires the best of the best, and it has been a joy working with each and every one of you on a daily basis, whether you were hired weeks ago or decades ago."

The Wall Street Journal claims iPad Mini is in Production

The Wall Street Journal started reporting this morning that Apple has begun production on a new tablet, which is smaller than its 9.7-inch iPad. Some of the informants, two to be precise, are claiming that it will have a 7.85 inch screen with a lower resolution than the current iPad. This would make the "iPad Mini" slightly larger than the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

Dead or Alive 5 Review

All of those things that you feel when you crack into a Mortal Kombat battle are the things that you can look forward to with this intense fighting game. The biggest difference is simply that Dead or Alive 5 is a whole Lot Better! It's a fighting game with a back story, and it's an exhilarating throwback to how games used to be, all while throwing you physically through the floor of a multi-story office complex. And for a cherry on top, it's the first multi-platform entry in the series.

Story Mode - has some very interesting attributes, starting off with a few ʻtouch and goʼ battles, trying to teach you the basic punches and kicks along with crucial timing. Having a grasp on combo's will make each match into a swift and decisive battle! The blocks and holds can cause a gnarly grasp if you don't pay close attention. And on top of that, just when you think youʼll be finishing one storyline, there is a twist thrown at you.

It's always a great deal when you can sit back and bequeath a glowing review. But, knowing that the story mode consuming a mere 5 hours of a beautiful Saturday afternoon bothers me. Granted, the genre isn't typically known for 40+ hours of gameplay, but I was still blown away by how quickly the final battles snuck up. Besides the short play time, the very dull and at times ridiculous reasons to spark a battle can get a pretty farfetched. Touching on the weird, kind of super natural feel some of the fighters have isn't explained at all. By hey, I'm an open minded Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter nerd.

If one were to print out the list of possible moves, it may be long enough to jump rope with! A key game mechanic and an Amazing Feature that Team Ninja implements into the DOA series, is the ability to counter attack. Now it may sound silly but, think for a second. Every possible move can be countered, blocked, or side stepped in some way. This developer technique has been known as a 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' way of competing. This has an astonishing way of wrapping the gamer into another rage to make the battle successful!

Butt Kicking Babe
Online - capabilities are almost a must with this days younger generation. It is sad to say but, there doesnʼt seem to be many that are attracted to repetitive and grueling fighting games as such, unless they had a nerdy dad that ate that sort of thing up as a kid. Will it ever come back? There was a time when fighting games were a huge thing! The good news is that I donʼt believe that it will ever leave forever as the Japanese nerds have a thing for flawless babes that can whoop some butt! DOA5 can provide you with a serious level of competition. As well as some easier, 'Just learning the ropes' style of game play. But going into every round expecting to roll over everyone isn't advised.

All in all, it does have its flaws. But walking in, fully understanding what the given genre provides, you can easily overlook the hiccups in this Tecmo production. Looking back on how the major plot twists to the story interested me, and the Epic stages always keeping me on my toes, I see that Dead or Alive 5 is a solid $30 game.

New Dual Analog Controller for iOS

While the race to create a universal game pad controller for Android devices is in full swing, Apple has time and time again refused to give a controller solution the go ahead, until now. The Duo Gamer is the first officially-sanctioned game pad for the iPod, iPad and iPhone, but there's a catch — it works exclusively with Gameloft games.

Discovery Bay Games, the company behind the Atari Arcade controller for the iPad, seems to have discovered the means to bypass Apple's anti-controller policy. The electronics giant doesn't seem to mind controllers dedicated to a single game or publisher, so while a game pad that works with every iOS game won't fly, the Gameloft-exclusive Duo Gamer isn't a threat to anyone's touch-screen sensibilities.

Thankfully Gameloft is responsible for some of the more console-quality, controller-friendly titles on the iOS platform. Titles like Asphalt 7: Heat, Order & Chaos Online and N.O.V.A. 3 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance all work with the Duo Gamer right out of the box. Connect the controller via Bluetooth, start the games and you're good to go. The game menus and hints reflect the pad's two analog sticks, d-pad, X, Y, A, B and shoulder buttons. It's that simple.

The controller itself is pretty basic too. It's more or less a flat plastic brick with controls on it, tapering slightly at the sides for comfort with two ridges beneath it to serve as finger rests. The unit ships with a Gameloft-branded stand for supporting your choice of iDevice while in play.

I've been toying around with the controller over the weekend, and so far it works as advertised. It only works with Gameloft titles of course, which never ceases to be incredibly frustrating. N.O.V.A. 3 plays wonderfully, and then I have to tuck away the controller and pick up my iPad to play Bastion with my fingers. For the $79.99 asking price I wouldn't mind a bit more freedom with the compatibility.

Still, let's not discount the tiny triumphs! Apple has approved a Game Pad that works on the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Perhaps Gameloft and Discovery Bay have just taken the first step towards a future where we can play games on Apple devices any way we'd like.

Or they could just make a different Duo Gamer for every iOS game publisher.
