The Eye is the New Mouse

Sci-Fi once again became reality when last year's CES introduced Tobii's new eye-tracking UI, appropriately named Gaze, that pans and zooms using only a touchpad and your eye direction, and it turned some heads (figuratively speaking). This year, they introduced REX, a proprietary peripheral that is able to connect to any Windows 8 PC through USB. The device is about the size of a pen, and just hangs out under your monitor, staring deeply into your eyes.

REX doesn't completely dominate the control method of your computer, it is used more as an assistive peripheral to your existing controls by integrating with your keyboard and mouse, making it distinctive from the technology of "PCEye," which made its debut in 2011 and took over the entire control scheme of the PC, almost making it as cool as the device used in Minority Report. ALMOST.
While Tobii is still keeping some details of distribution under wraps, they project to release 5,000 units by the end of the year. The special edition of REX (pictured), however, has just been released for the retail price of $995. That's not too bad, considering you can be ALMOST as cool as Tom Cruise. Now all we need to wait for are those three-fingered gloves.
