GameStick Kicks Ouya Where It Hurts

We were all very excited when the Ouya was first unveiled on Kickstarter. The idea of a tiny little console that is open sourced and can deliver the best Android games to your living room for only $99, took the gaming community by surprise. Now a new foe has risen to challenge Ouya just as the developer kits have been sent out. The GameStick, by PlayJam, arrived on Kickstarter today and it promises everything that Ouya does, but portable. With the GameStick, you will be able to pull the little HDMI dongle out of the controller and plug it into your HD TV. The dongle gets it's power directly from the HDMI and features a 1.5 GHz dual-core Amlogic 8726-MX processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8GB of flash storage, and will also have built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Obviously, this is not as powerful as the Ouya's Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, but the GameStick will still be able to produce HD resolution for graphically intense Android games.

The GameStick will run on Android 4.1, and PlayJam claims to have over 200 games getting support for the system. The Controller features dual analog sticks, a D-Pad, and four face buttons. The demonstration video shows one of the prototypes running ShadowGun. PlayJam is shooting for a goal of $100,000 on Kickstarter and is offering a free system, beta test access, and a job at their company for anyone who pledges enough. The GameStick will retail for $79.
