What To Expect In The Next-Generation

by Dexter Jaekel

All this talk of Next-Generation Consoles has really gotten me excited for the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014. I really just can't wait to put my hands on this technology and play to my hearts content. Until the day when the Xbox 720 or the PlayStation 4 is released, all I can do to tide myself over is watch rare tech demos released to give us a taste of what the next generation has in store. I've decided to share my Tech Demo playlist with you all. You're welcome.

(Please try to watch all of these videos at the highest quality possible)

First off is the Samaritan Trailer. This Tech Demo is showing off the Unreal Engine 3 and was released back in 2011. So this is an old idea of what the next gen could offer. Keep in mind that this is all being played in real-time

Next up is a tech demo released by Square Enix in June of 2012. The video was so well received by the gaming community that a petition was started to get this tech demo turned into a real game.

This here is just a standard walkthrough video showing off some of the new effects that will be usable in the next gen. You will see splash effects, physics, dynamic lighting, dynamic reflection, etc.

Here is an amazing video made by Vaya

Here is the revolutionary soft body technology for car crashes demonstrated on the CryEngine3

Here is a demonstration of the CryEngine3. The video is showing off the current gen game, Crysis 3, however it is running in the next gen specs. The interesting thing about CryEngine3, and most new engines these days, is that they are designed to work for current generation but also designed to move seamlessly into the next generation when it gets here.

Here is the video for The Phantom Pain (MGS5?) revealed at the VGAs in 2012. There is no information available for this game other than this video, and it leads me to believe that this will be a next gen title. I am including it here because this seems feasible for early next gen quality.

Lastly, I have the video for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. There is also very little information available on this game, and looking at the graphical quality, it is reasonable to think that it could be a next gen title.

I hope you enjoyed this little tour of what we can look forward to in the coming generation, and if you have any suggestions for videos to add to this post, please add it to the comments.
