Ubuntu Phone OS Unleashed

Today, Canonical has unleashed the Ubuntu Smartphone OS for devs. The Ubuntu OS is built around the existing Android Kernel and Drivers. The Ubuntu OS promises to use the full power of the smartphone it is installed on. Since Ubuntu OS is supported by ARM and x86 processors, it will be easy for Android phone makers to implement with little adaptation. While the new OS has been released today, there won't be any phones released with Ubuntu pre-installed anytime soon. Canonical has not announced any carrier or manufacturer support, thus far. According to Canonical, the first proper Ubuntu Smartphones should arrive in early 2014.

Why should you be excited? Ubuntu OS has a few features that will make it stand out from the competition. Thumb Gestures along the edge of the screen are expected to add depth and convenience for Ubuntu users. If a user performs a short swipe from the left side of the screen, then a dock of your favorite apps will come up. If a user swipes all the way from left to right, then the dock of running apps will appear. Swiping from the right will let you switch back to the last app you had open.

So far, the Galaxy Nexus is the only officially supported phone running the Ubuntu OS for developers.
