Crytek Will Not Pursue Darksiders 3

In the aftermath of THQ's downfall Crytek employed many of Vigil's staff and now they have confirmed that they will not pursue Darksiders 3.

Instead, the studio has formed Crytek USA, which is captained by former Vigil head David Adams and populated by a skeleton crew of ex-Vigil staff.

"We were surprised when nobody bid on Vigil", Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told GamesBeat. "We would have liked to have bid, but there were too many unknowns."

Yerli said that Crytek considered bidding on Vigil during THQ's bankruptcy auction, but eventually decided against it based on what the Vigil was working on at the time. Following a phone conversation with Adams though, Yerli met with the then ex-Vigil staff in Austin and later decided to form an Austin-based studio around the core team.

"We had chosen Austin as the destination for [our U.S. branch], and we needed a lean and core team of experts to run the studio. At the same time, we didn't want to continue with Darksiders 3, since that doesn't fit with our strategy. So when I heard that [THQ laid off everyone at Vigil], I decided on Saturday morning to fly out to meet with them to see if the team would be interested to join our mission, which is significantly different than what this team has done before."

Instead, Yerli claims the team will work on a project that "the team identifies as what they want to do", insisting that Crytek didn't simply task them with their own game concept. "Right now, they just know what the strategy of Crytek is and the framework we need to satisfy, but none of that drives what the game is about."

Crytek also acquired the Homefront IP. A new sequel will continue development under its new owners.
