Arnold's comeback movie since taking office in 2003, was a complete failure at the box-office. "Last Stand" opened in tenth place with a estimated total of $6.3 million. With a budget of almost $45 million, "Last Stand" will go down as a major disappointment. It's highly unlikely that "Last Stand" will recoup its budget back, even with international gross.
"Mama" was number one with $28.1 million. The del Torro produced flick was a huge surprise hit that greatly exceeded my expectations. It has a decent RT score, so expect a good holdover next week.
"Broken City" disappointed with $9 million. It was way off par from recent Mark Wahlberg movies. I'm curious on how this one will perform overseas.
After two months in limited release, "Silver Lining Playbook" was unleashed to a very good $11.4 million. With the Oscars coming up, expect the film to grow each week.
All holdovers are in the decent range, but I'm so happy that "Texas Chainsaw 3D" has been knocked out of the top ten and getting destroyed every weekend after its debut. The movie is a travesty to the world and the producers and director should be ashamed of themselves. Do not see this movie.
My predictions from last week were horrible.
Mama $10.5 million - reality $28.1 million
Broken City $21- reality $9 million
Last Stand $19 - reality $6.3 million
Lesson learned; Jessica Chastain is 2013's box-office gold. Big names don't guarantee big hits.
This weekends predictions;
Movie 43 - $14 million
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters - $9 million
Parker - $8 million
Results:
1.Mama $28.1 million
2.Zero Dark Thirty $17.6 million
3.Silver Linings Playbook $11.4 million
4.Gangster Squad $9.1 million
5.Broken City $9 million
6.A Haunted House $8.3 million
7.Django Unchained $8.2 million
8.Les Miserables $7.8 million
9.The Hobbit $6.4 million
10.The Last Stand $6.3 million
