Earlier today, a group of Belgian scientists from the Centre of Microsystems Technology unveiled a small spherical LCD that could be embedded into contact lenses. The prototype, shown below, has a dollar sign on it. Its creators say this a nod to the "many cartoons that feature people or figures with dollars in their eyes."
While the design is overly simple, the implications are tremendous. Unfortunately, the eye cannot focus on anything so close as what's displayed on the lenses, so there is still no hope for having a futuristic Heads-Up-Display from your contacts. So essentially the only people who get the effect of the LCD contacts are the ones looking at the wearer. However, there are other uses that could be beneficial to mankind. Imagine someone with extreme sensitivity to light, these lenses could provide light protection. Imagine someone with different colored eyes, these lenses could balance out the color scheme. Imagine further down the road, light sensing technology gets incorporated into these LCD Contacts. A person could effectively never need sunglasses again if the lenses could darken automatically in bright situations.
What other uses can you think of?
