F.E.A.R. 3 continues the creepy and depressing story of Alma via her two psychic psychotic homicidal estranged sons, Fettel and Pointman. This FPS is full of guns, blood, scares, and is a great addition to the F.E.A.R. series.
Story:
Interestingly enough, the overly gored plot has the basis of love. Alma, who we all know has some inner demons, really cares for her maniacal offspring. And she is more pissed than ever. Turns out she raped a man in order to give birth to a new evil and your objective is to find Alma and stop the birth. Your brother Fettel, however, wants the birth to occur and to usher in a new member to the family. Alma’s contractions rock the world around you and unleashes Hell on Earth.
Not much has changed from FEAR 2 other than more details and a better frame rate. The game plays smooth and there were no glitches or lag problems that were noticeable. Colors and shadows reflect your movements and how you progress though the levels; houses, tunnels, building, corridors, labs, cellers, etc. Lighting effects are top-notch.
Gameplay:
Responsive would be the best word to describe FEAR 3. The game can react to all the number of combinations your fingers could pull off. Slow-motion adds the entertainment value as well as a major part of gameplay to strategies against tougher foes. Without “Slo-mo” some of the harder moments of the game would be near impossible to surpass.
The controller’s layout is both normal to most FPS’ memory, but FEAR 3 needs a little getting used to for some of the minor controller commands.
The skills and rank system tally up how you did after every interval is passed. Challenges, objectives, hidden objects are all marked and added up at the end to give you ranks. Although, in my opinion, games like FEAR 3 add a ranking system just to make the player’s ego greater by wanting to achieve the next level time and time again. BUT, the competitive play feature adds to a nice multiplayer factor.
Types of Enemies:
- FEAR Soldiers - wielding pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles, and SMGs
- “Crazies” - Zombie-like psychopaths wielding melee weapons
- Knife-throwing “Crazies” - The name is self explanatory for these acrobatic killers.
- Mechs- Mech-Warrior type body armor that wields heavy machine guns, pulse rays, and/or missles.
- Elite FEAR Soldiers - Equipped body armor and higher quality skills. (tougher AI)
- Pinky Monsters - Pinky from the Doom movie sums up these hellspawn quite nicely. They can appear anywhere.
- Helicopters - consider this a mini boss. Easy to kill you and needs special weapons to take down (RPGs)
- Phase Commanders - Easily the hardest and most frustrating enemies of the game. The key to defeating them is to use EMP grenades (Electrial charges) to freeze the enemy in place, Slo-mo, and unload your best weapon on them or lob grenades into the face!
There are four game modes that are going to be included in F.E.A.R. 3 multiplayer. The four game modes are "Fucking Run" "Contractions" "Soul Survivor" and "Soul King". "Fucking Run" features 4 players running through waves of enemies, all the while running from Alma's massive "Wall of Death." The players start off in a safe room and proceed through levels, killing enemies within a certain amount of time.
There are several safe rooms throughout the mode, and if a player is downed, one of the co-op players can revive them. If one player is killed the game is over. "Contractions" is a survival round-based game mode where you must barricade and stock up weapons against 20 waves of enemies from the F.E.A.R. 3 single player, similar to Call of Duty's "Nazi Zombies," although the farther you increase through the waves the tougher it gets by adding a fog effect that creeps closer and closer making the map much more dangerous.
"Soul Survivor" has four players pitted against each other with one player playing as a "Spectre" in which he or she has to possess enemies to kill the other three players and turn them into Spectres before the time runs out. "Soul King" is similar to Soul Survivor but with the exception that all the players play as Spectres and must possess enemies to kill each other and collect dropped souls. Teamwork and cooperation is needed for players to win in the game modes.
+ Gameplay Mechanics
+ Action-packed Story line that keeps your attention
+ Haunting plot that progresses comfortably even if it gives you goosebumps
- Game Length; took me less than 12 hours to complete.
F.E.A.R. 3 is a solid game and is worth the play. I see this game as more of a rent than a buy unless you’re a FEAR series fan and want to keep the collection. I give F.E.A.R. 3 a 4/5.
