Medal of Honor: Warfighter Review

Medal of Honor: Warfighter is just like every other First-Person Shooter out there, but the only catch is that it doesn't do it nearly as well as everyone else does. From the very opening sequence it is apparent that you won't be having a great time. Most all games these days start off with a very exciting intro sequence, and Warfighter is no different, except this intro actually isn't fun at all. From then on, the 5+ hour single player campaign goes down hill.

In Medal of Honor: Warfighter, you play as a handful of Tier 1 operatives trying to prevent a Global catastrophe of some sort. I say that only because in the jumbled mess of changing characters and time periods, the true meaning and motive of the story gets lost. It is very impressive whenever you see "Based on Real Events" in the corner when you start each mission. The thought runs through your head, "Wow, someone actually went through something similar to this! What a crazy job to have." But, the fact that this storyline is pieced together from actual missions makes for a very disheveled narrative.

Maybe you aren't interested in Warfighter for the story. Maybe your interested in the gameplay. Well there is little here to be excited about from a gameplay perspective. The enemies are dumb and will pop out from behind the same cover over and over again until you slaughter them, or they will just stand out in the open waiting for a bullet. There are two things that I found to be unique and enjoyable about the gunplay, however. Warfighter gives you two ways to aim down the barrel. By holding L1, you look into your scope and can strafe left and right just like any other FPS know to man, but, by holding L2, you will lean left or right or peek up. This is wonderful for a cover based FPS and a refreshing take on the problem. The other unique offering is that every gun has an an alt mode for looking down the barrel. For instance, one gun has both a scope and (by pressing R3) an iron sight. This was great for me because most shooters I play force me to bring multiple guns for multiple situations. Warfighter allowed me to carry one Assault Rifle that was perfect for close encounters and long ranged shoot outs.

It's Shocking How Little Control You Have In These Moments
Sadly, those are the only two redemptive features of Warfighter. Developer Danger Close tries to spice things up with vehicular sequences, but these provide little to no excitement. You will find yourself piloting a bot, steering a boat, driving a car, and being a door gunner on a chopper, but none of these aren't very much fun because they have all been done before and they have all been done better. Several times while playing Warfighter I found myself just wishing that I was playing something else. Most of the campaign forces you down a narrow path, encountering enemies with little choice on attack strategy. All of this makes for a very boring game, but maybe you're thinking that the multiplayer will be the game's redemption.

The Images Make The Game Look Pretty, But Don't Be Fooled
Well, you would be wrong. The multiplayer does little to distinguish itself from other heavy hitting FPS games. Hotspot, the best mode, has the attacking team trying to plant 3 bombs in different locations on the map while the defending team has to kill 100 foes in order to win the round. If all this sounds familiar, it's because this mode exists in Battlefield 3, and they executed it 100 times better in Battlefield.

The truth is, you should go pick up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3 before you buy this game. You will save yourself some money, and you will have a much better multiplayer experience. Sad to say, I give Metal of Honor: Warfighter a score of $15/$60.
